Finding a Home for Daisy

Blog readers and dog lovers – can we find a home for this sweet pup??

Daisy

One of our blog readers, Jessie, has recently moved and discovered that her new smaller back yard just isn’t enough for this sweet pup, Daisy.  She is trying to do the responsible thing and find a loving family that can give Daisy the attention, love, and exercise she needs!

The great news is that Daisy is good with other dogs and children.  (She currently lives with a 3 year old.)  She is full grown at 45 pounds and is up to date with all of her shots.  She is still a puppy, though (almost a year old) and has lots of that puppy energy.  She is currently living Spring, Texas.

If you are interested in giving sweet Daisy a forever home – or have any more questions about her – email us here at blog@wagsandwhiskershouston.com.

Please HELP! Found Dog in Houston!

Husky Found Vet

This beautiful guy was found last Friday (October 17th) near Montrose here in Houston.  He was lucky enough to have found dog lover (and all around wonderful lady) Laura who immediately took him to Central Houston Animal Hospital.  He is not microchiped or neutered but unfortunately is heart worm positive (treatment has been started.)

People are guessing he is a Husky or white German Shepard…and he is got a set of those amazing different colored eyes (right is brown and left is parti-eyed…blue, white, AND brown.)  He is 55 pounds and young (most likely around 1-2 years)…but more importantly he is SUPER sweet.  He has interacted with many people and dogs, and he has been friendly with everyone.  On a walk, he didn’t even go nuts when he saw a cat (which is more than I can say for most of the dogs I walk!)

Laura is not able to adopt this guy right now….and yet she still stopped to help him.  Knowing that she was unable to take him in herself – she still loaded him up, got him to the vet, and started heart worm treatment.  This woman is a saint!

Can you help us find a forever home for this amazing dog?  Even a foster??  If you could even spread the word about this amazing animal, we would really appreciate it.  Email a pic to your dog lovin’ friends, put a link to this post up on social media….or spread the word the old fashioned way and just TALK to someone!

Please leave comments below with any advice…or just to give Laura some words of encouragement.  If you know of a rescue group or individual who is interested…or would like more information, please email blog@wagsandwhiskershouston.com.

THANKS!  Let’s all work together – we all know this guy (like all animals) deserves a loving, caring home!

Cats & Kittens in Need of Homes – UPDATE

Bo Cat

Who can find a home for Mr. Bo?

Thank you all for reading my last post about the kitties in the Houston area searching for forever homes!

Happy news!  Three of the kitties (including Caterpillar and one of the black & white kitties feature in our last post) have found their way into homes or no kill shelters.  Our job is not done just yet, though….let’s try to find a home for this sweet boy.  His name is Bo, and while he started off a shy man, he is already warming up to his foster mom, Shanna.  Who knows of a home that needs a furry friend?

Cats & Kittens in Need of Homes in Houston – PLEASE HELP!

The stray cat population in Houston…or let’s face it EVERYWHERE…is outrageous.

I will never forget when I got first hand knowledge of how out of control the situation was.  I was at a neighborhood shelter, desperately trying to get medical attention for an injured pup I had found.  (My vet said they could not legally treat her because she wasn’t mine…only shelters have that privilege.  Desperate for advice, I drove to a local “private” shelter.)  As I was waiting for shelter employee to come back with paperwork, I man jumped out of his car with a cat and RAN towards me.  Quickly handing the cat at me, he explained he was moving and could not keep him.  As I tried to explain I did not work here and therefore had no authority to accept any animals, he literally threw $20 at me and mumbled about no one taking in cats.  As he made a break for his car, the shelter employee returned…took one look at me, the cat, the $20, and the escaping man…she grabbed the money and the feline and CHASED THE MAN DOWN.  Full out running.  The man dashing to make a clean getaway.  The shelter didn’t have room for even one more cat.  The man had (obviously, I realized later) already been to several shelters.  The insane seriousness of this problem did not hit me until I saw a poor woman running across a parking lot clutching a cat.

There is no way to ever estimate how many stray cats end up in shelters every year…let alone how many cats are left roaming the streets.  (Read about escaping pets here.)   I can’t even bring myself to wonder how many are euthanized.

This is why when Shanna, a fellow Houstonian, reached out to me for help in finding homes for the twelve (yes, TWELVE!) kitties living around her home – I had to do everything in my power to help.

Cute kittens EVERYWHERE...can you take on in??

Shanna has used her own income to pay for 3 of the kitties to be spayed/neutered.  No discounts.  No donations.  No help.  She has been caring for them all, but she is moving in September and needs to find homes for these little furry friends.  Shanna does not want to just dump these sweet creatures off at a kill shelter…nor does she want to leave them on the street.

So, who needs a cat?!?  She’s got shy ones and friendly ones.  She’s got a mama and her kittens.  Look at the pictures in this post and decide which one is right for you!

Please spread the word about these sweet creatures.  If you have any advice on no-kill shelters to contact in the Houston area or are interest in adopting one of these furbabies, please email Wags & Whiskers at info@wagsandwhiskershouston.com

My Kind of Party

As I grow older, I am less inclined to go out and be social….and more excited to spend time at home with an amazing book (currently Storm of Swords by J.R.R. Martin) in my pjs, looking up about every 2 minutes to see what adorable pose Buffy has managed to contort herself into while sleeping.  If not at home, I am perfectly content to work.  (Work being pretty much the same thing – except at a different house with a dog whose parents are out of town.)  You wouldn’t exactly call me Miss Social Butterfly.  So when Buffy and I got the invite to go to a dog birthday party, I was a bit more excited than I let on.  This seemed the perfect way to blend what I’m comfortable with and what I love (dogs!) with my new year’s resolution (have/make friends!)

Look at all that space to play - and that is just one corner!

Pico’s 1st birthday was being celebrated at The Boneyard.  (Many of you will remember Pico from his adorable Christmas picture featured in the holiday edition of Wags & Whiskers Wednesday!)  The Boneyard is AWESOME!  Sure, I’ve been to dog parks.  Yeah, I might be lame…but I have been to my fair share of bars.  Dogs + dog lovers/friends + mimosas = THE BEST BAR EVER!  All the dogs present (not just Pico’s friends) were polite and social.  And let’s face it – if I’m going to chit-chat with strangers at a bar, these are the people I want to be talking to – hip, fun, friendly….and attached to their dogs.

The birthday boy!

The only surprise of the day?  Buffy!  She wasn’t aggressive or even fearful, but she never ventured more than a few feet from me.  While the other dogs would run and play (Boneyard has lots of open space for just that) Buffy was content to watch the action sitting right next to me.  I would love to know what you think of that.  She’s been to dog parks, and while she isn’t overly friendly, she usually finds a pal or two to roam with.  My best guess is that it was a new place with a lot going on….I’ve definitely gone to parties where all I did was sit in the corner with the only person I knew.

Buffy and I will definitely be going back to the Boneyard soon.  Houstonians, I highly reccommend it!  I would love to hear about similar dog friendly establishments here but especially in other towns.  Based on your opinions, maybe I can feature more of them here!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PICO!

Are you (and your pup) ready for some (fantasy) football?

My brother (a.k.a. #1 Met's fan) might get a dog just so he can buy this

I spend a lot of time on my computer.  (One might even say too much time.)  This weekend, though, my time spent staring at my computer screen was for a good reason – fantasy football.  Ah, football, how I have missed you.   Being from Texas, football truly is a way of life.  College or pro…Monday night or Saturday afternoon…it really does not matter to me.  I love it all.

No...I did not draft any Texans

What else do I love?  I love dogs.  There is nothing I love more than seeing two things I love smooshed into one, and that is why I love Sugar Chic.

The only other thing Buffy would need is one of the corn hats

In one of my Google, Twitter, Facebook sessions, I came across this website.  (I now follow them on Twitter – @SugarChic) I look at a ridiculous number of dog products sites and catalogs, and to be quite honest – they start to blend together a lot of the time.  Sugar Chic, though, has something that a lot of places don’t – sports gear for your pup!  They even have NCAA team gear!  (Only one Texas item…that was a bit disappointing!) They have everything: leashes, bowls, cheerleader outfits, jersey’s, shirts, and toys.  I definitely recommend you taking a look around their website (www.sugarchiccouture.com) to prepare your pup for the season.

Another reason Sugar Chic caught my eye is that they carry a wide variety of sizes – not just XS and S.  I’ve noticed a lot of stores think that chihuahua parents are the only ones who like their pups to look cute.  It’s true, I’m not going to dress my lab up in a tutu, but I wouldn’t mind putting a little something-or-other on her  every now and then.

The Sugar Chic site has many other adorable items that at the very least have unique names (Chewy Vuiton!) Their Dog Costume’s page featured some Halloween duds that are better than your average (and many times stereotypical and overdone) outfits.  My only complaint would again be that their largest size costume fits a 20-25 pound dog.

And for those of you who are interested, my fantasy draft went quite well.  I definitely consider it a success.  Buffy sat at my feet as I put together what (I hope) will be my dream team.  She only stirred when I drafted Matthew Stafford (who could blame her???), but once I assured her he was just warming my bench she went back to sleep.
