The extended family is coming over to our house for Halloween this year. I’ll be cleaning/cooking/costuming my own kiddo, so I wasn’t sure I wanted to tackle dog costumes as well! Still, I think the dogs should look festive for the holiday.
Buffy has a skeleton dog shirt that she will be debuting this year (a Target SUPER markdown from last Halloween)…but Amigo didn’t have anything to wear to the party. Hence the brand new, handmade bow tie!
As someone who cannot use a needle and thread to save her life, I can honestly say this was a super easy project. Instead of taking step by step pictures as I went for the blog (honestly – this would have been quite embarrassing) I am going to tell you to read instructions on BarkPost here or check out this video on YouTube. While I didn’t follow either one to the letter (I didn’t use an iron or a hot glue gun), these gave me a good idea of what I needed to do. While I initially measured (or cut? or read the tape measure? Have I mentioned how bad I am at sewing???) wrong…once I recut the pieces, it was smooth sailing.
I think this is an absolutely adorable way to get Amigo in on the Halloween fun. He has been wearing it around…and doesn’t seem to mind it at all. I can’t wait to see what our party guests say about our dapper little man!
It’s Monday….the Monday before Halloween. Hopefully you’ve bought your candy, finished up your costumes, and now are just waiting for Friday. To kick off this holiday week, I suggest you stop working immediately, and check out these list of pets in costumes. (Because what is the internet for if not to look at pictures of cute animals??) While you’re at it, make sure to take our poll and let us know if your pooch or kitty cat will be dressing up this year.
Happy Monday…and enjoy!
26 Dogs Who Hate Their Halloween Costumes – This list is awesome because instead of focusing on the Halloween costumes…it focuses on the facial expressions of adorable pups who are obviously not thrilled to be dressing up. Ah, the things that our pets do to make us happy!
25+ Terrifyingly Cute Costumes for Pets – I love this list because it has lots of non- dog animals in costumes. (And not just cats…guinea pigs, horses, lizards….) Make sure to click “show more” when you get to the bottom to check out all the costumes posted. You can even add a picture of your own pet to the list!
Some people REALLY get into Halloween (Have you guys seen some crazy yard decorations? I’ve seen people really getting into it this year!)…while other people seem to try to ignore it as much as they can.
I’ve found completely opposing views on celebrating Halloween with pets as well. Some people buy or make elaborate costumes for their dogs…others seem to think dressing their dogs up is cruel and unusual punishment for their furbabies.
To kick off the Wags & Whiskers Blog countdown to Halloween, we thought we would start with a survey to see how our readers felt about pets and the holiday. Let us know where you stand – we would love to hear more about your opinion in the comments!
(Be sure to check the blog daily for more fur-based Halloween stories!)
I’m not sure who is cuter on this holiday – dogs or kids! I’ve seen some pretty adorable pet costumes this year…we will have to see the adorable-ness the trick-or-treaters bring tonight. Just remember, not all dogs are fond of this loud, door bell ringing holiday. Don’t feel bad about confining a not-so-social pooch to a back room. You might hear some growls and barks, but I assure you they will be much less anxious away from the hoards of kiddos hyped up on chocolate.
The ASPCA has a great list of Halloween Safety Tips that are definitely worth a read before the festivities begin tonight. The Humane Society has also complied a great list of ways to Spare Your Pet the Spooks this Halloween. Remember, that while you surely wouldn’t feed your dog chocolate intentionally, you might be so distracted by the costumes and excitement, you miss your furbaby jumping up on a counter or sneaking candy from careless child. (Refresh your memory on why chocolate is so bad for our pups here.) Make sure to keep your bowl of candy high and in your sights the whole night.
But now…for the pictures you’ve all been waiting for…
Seriously…this has got to be one of the best homemade dog costumes ever. I am not a fan of Honey Boo Boo (still not even sure who she is) but this is absolutely amazing! Thanks to client Alicia for sending this one my way.
Wonder Dog to the rescue! (And the cutest Minnie Mouse)
Buffy (as a beautiful princess) and Scarlett (as the cutest pumpkin alive!)
How was everyone’s Halloween? My mom and I ventured into uncharted territory over the weekend by taking our dogs to Bridgeland’s Howl-o-ween Fest. Thousands of adorably dressed dogs and kids with dog performances and fashion shows, booths, rescue groups, demonstrations….everything you would expect in a festival. The unexpected? How well Buffy and Scarlett behaved. I was unsure how my own pup would do in her first “festival” experience (aka an insane amount of costumed creatures with loud noises in a large space), but she remained relatively calm and got lots of compliments on her princess costume. Scarlett, forever shy and scared, was unsure what was going on at first, but after a while seemed to realize she wasn’t in any immediate danger and thus began to enjoy herself. Mom and I had lots of fun shopping, collecting numerous freebies, and chatting with the friendly gathering of fellow dog lovers. I would definitely recommend it anyone in the Houston area!!
So, how could I not post pictures of our costumed pups?! Enjoy these adorable pooches in disguise!
Remember – if you would like to see your furbaby featured in next weeks post, send pics (along with your dog’s name and anything we should know about him or her) to email@example.com
“Cuteness” is the word of the week on the W&W Blog. Did you see our post on the evolution of your dog’s cuteness? Check it out and make sure to leave a comment so we know what you think!
Today is the last Wednesday in September…which means we are almost to October. You know what that means – HALLOWEEN COSTUMES! If you happen to have a pic of your pooch in costume, please please PLEASE send it to us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We’d love to include it on the blog (plus, we need ideas for our own pups!)
Without further ado, here are our star pups for the week:
